about us

I’m Michael McCartney, the guy on the left, and I run Michael McCartney Fitness. I’m an experienced Level 3 REPS qualified personal trainer. I’m 43 and also work as a journalist.

I became a personal trainer in my late 30s because I have a genuine interest in fitness and nutrition – I want to help people become healthier and more active. I specialise in weight-loss and conditioning programmes, especially for clients aged 30+, and provide running coaching for distances from 5k to half marathon and marathon. 

Your training programme with me will be based on weight training, HIIT and cardio – supported by flexibility and core strength work – in small commercial gyms in Glasgow and Lanarkshire. You can also train at your home or outdoors.

The service you’ll get with Michael McCartney Fitness is friendly and supportive, with a dedicated and analytical approach to your training. My aim if to help you make lasting changes by retaining good exercise and nutritional habits.

You don’t have to sacrifice endless hours of your time or give up the food and drink you enjoy. It’s my job as a personal trainer to help you see that making those adjustments is absolutely achievable – and that you can enjoy training and all the benefits it brings.

We have a ‘fitness for life’ approach and will work with you to get a clear understanding of your goals, challenges and lifestyle, so that we can build a programme that will work for your body, at a time that works for your schedule, in a way that gets the results you’re looking for.

Training isn’t, or shouldn’t be, about enduring a horrendous, gruelling session. It’s about exercising in a way that appeals to you, in an environment that you feel comfortable in, going at your pace. Shouting at  you ‘boot camp’ style isn’t our style!

Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand when it comes to your training journey but making these changes to what you eat is sometimes easier said than done. We’ll help you to make realistic tweaks to your diet with a nutrition plan that's appealing, accessible, easy to stick to and relatable.

We believe that wherever you are in your stage of life, it’s never too late to get your health and fitness to where you want it to be.  Whether you’re taking your first step or training for your next marathon, we have the tools, training, knowledge and expertise to help you to transform your lifestyle or to beat your PB.

We help you make the improvements you’re looking for at your own pace, in your own space and build a programme with the right strength, core and cardio workouts, combined with a nutrition plan, that will make you feel fitter, fresher and more capable from the word go.

If it is delivered properly then no, absolutely not. All of our training is delivered at a pace that will suit you and in a way that will help you to get the best personal results, with gradual improvement in core stability, cardio fitness, strength, muscular endurance and range of movement.

We want this to be doable and sustainable, otherwise, what would be the point? We’ll help you to build your knowledge to achieve the healthy lifestyle, body and fitness levels you’re looking for. We'll give you the belief that you can make these long-lasting changes and that's where we really differ from taking up a gym plan that you abandon after a month. 

Our goal is to give you new habits that ensure you retain your fitness and remain healthy well beyond your training with us. We have different programmes for different clients and different packages for different people. We will build a programme that works for you and gives you the results you’re looking for, whether you want to train twice a week or only have a spare hour to commit every now and again basis.

Some of our clients use their training sessions to shape their fitness activities carried out in their own time, and others rely on the accountability of working with us regularly to keep up their activity levels and progress.
